Status: Ready to ship for the next owner - for The Ocean Race and other events. Shrink wrapped and ready to go.
The Volvo Ocean 65 is an iconic ocean greyhound. Conceived especially for the Volvo Ocean Race, it was designed to provide a one-design class to keep costs down and offer close and entertaining races for the public.
Farr Yachts' design produced a yacht that is just 2.7% slower than the Volvo 70 class, but significantly more robust and designed with enhanced crew protection. The Volvo 65 holds the Volvo Ocean Race 24-hour distance record, showcasing its strong build and excellent design.
Volvo Ocean 65 NO6 has competed in the race multiple times, originally as VESTAS and TURN THE TIDE ON PLASTIC. Now available from the new owners for the next race and beyond, she comes as a complete package with support containers.
Designer: Farr Yacht Design
Builder: Persico Marine
Model: SPECTRA watermaker - Cape Horn Xtreme model. Can be run on one pump for efficiency or two for speed.
Equipped to cover every possible emergency with satellite communications, Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs), Personal Location Beacons (PLBs), Search and Rescue Transponders (SARTs), and handheld VHF radios along with aviation frequency emergency radios. Additional safety equipment includes life rafts, Jon Buoys for man overboard recovery, extensive medical equipment, flares, a man overboard alerting and positioning system, and lifejackets and harnesses.
The Volvo 65 employs 24-volt DC electrical systems for weight-saving. Mastervolt lithium-ion batteries save as much as 70% in weight over traditional battery technology. These are recharged via two heavy-duty Mastervolt alternators with 150-amp output. It takes around one hour a day to bring all systems up to full charge, minimizing diesel fuel usage.
The deck-stepped mast has a tube length of 28.4m (98') and is built from High Modulus Carbon Fibre. It was designed in-house by Southern Spars using the DesMan and RigCalc software packages, integrated with North Sails design software. The Volvo Ocean 65 sports a 7.68m racing box boom built from high modulus carbon and weighing 68kgs.
