Oyster Yachts is a British brand of bluewater sailing yachts that has built luxury, performance deck saloon yachts for over 50 years. Current models range from 50 feet to 90 feet, with many other existing models on the market. Search for new and used Oyster Yachts for sale in your area and refine by price and model.
Oyster Yachts describes its elegant cruising sailing yachts as a “platform for adventure, designed and hand-built for comfort, luxury, performance and safety.” It is a clear ethos, one that has been recognized widely by private owners and charter companies for over 50 years. Throughout that time, Oyster has had a single focus—to build strong, safe, high-quality performance bluewater sailing yachts that also provide luxury and comfort in equal measure. The result is a long legacy and an impressive lineup of deck saloon yachts.
British brand Oyster Yachts was founded in 1973 by Richard Matthews, who launched the first model, the UFO 34. The first Oyster-branded yacht, the Oyster 35, followed in 1978 and pioneered the deck saloon, a unique feature that remains on all Oyster models to this day. While the first Oysters were designed as racing yachts, their seaworthiness and durability meant they quickly became noticed by bluewater sailors.
Throughout the 1990s and after, Oyster Yachts continued to develop and today has built over 50 different models. Of these, there are seven that are sixth generation models, including the award-winning Oyster 565 and Oyster 595. Explorer yachts were designed and built, including the Oyster 575, 625, 675, 745, and the brand’s flagship model, the Oyster 885.
In addition to sales of new boats, Oyster was one of the first brands to set up its own brokerage in the 1980s, providing a professional service in which owners could buy and sell both new and used boats. In 2005, Oyster yacht charter was added and has proven hugely successful.
Testament to the huge popularity of these cruising yachts is the success of the Oyster World Rally, which was launched in 2013 and was held again in 2017 and 2024, and scheduled for 2028.
Oyster Yachts has built over 1,100 yachts. Their seaworthiness and durability has made them extremely popular on the used market, where they hold their value well.
The current lineup is an amalgamation of the successes of the past, with a range of six yachts, the Oysters 495, 565, 595, 675, 745, and 885SII.
The smallest in the range is the Oyster 495, a highly capable shorthanded sailing yacht that was awarded European Yacht of the Year 2023. It incorporates all the luxury and comfort of the larger models into a smaller package that has been designed for ease of handling.
The Oyster 565 has also been designed with shorthanded sailing in mind. With a large sail area, wide beam, and twin rudders, it is spacious and practical, as well as ultra comfortable for extended living aboard.
Described by Oyster as the perfect all-round adventurer, the Oyster 595 has impressive living spaces combined with high-performance sailing capabilities and is capable of maintaining fast cruising speeds. An increased hull volume and longer waterline offers interior space in various layouts for up to eight passengers.
The Oyster 675 is a true ocean sailboat, yet its clever configuration and design—including automated push-button sailing technology—means it can still be sailed short-handed as well as with a crew. At 70 feet, it can accommodate eight passengers in comfort, as well as vital provisions for long periods at sea. Features such as a reinforced, monolithic composite hull and reinforced keel make it robust and strong, and able to tackle any of the world’s oceans.
The Oyster 745 has been designed for long-range cruising and is equipped to travel for long periods of time to any corner of the world. It has dedicated crew quarters, offers lots of customization and layout options, vast tanks and stowage, and the latest in entertainment and electronics. Yet this isn’t the largest model in the lineup—the Oyster 885SII stands as the brand’s largest. At 90 feet and hugely customizable (choose everything from the type of keel to the interior layout), it offers spacious decks with a chillout zone, fore and aft decks, and a bathing platform, as well as crew quarters alongside en suite cabins complete with touchscreen lighting.
Who founded Oyster and when was it founded? Oyster was founded by Richard Matthews in the year 1973.
