"Ursa Minor," hull number four of the 1988 Kadey-Krogen 54s, is brand new to the market. This series of eight full displacement and ballasted trawler style yachts have earned their spot in yacht design history as one of the most capable long-range cruisers of this size ever built. For the past 16 years, Ursa Minor has been owned by a retired superyacht captain and his wife. Because of the seller's background, these owners have been able to maintain and upgrade their Kadey-Krogen 54 to standards much higher than most owner operators. Also, the current owners have invested in many upgrades over the years. A new main Lugger engine, a new Northern Lights generator, a recent exterior Awlgrip paintjob plus a completely refit interior are four upgrades done during their time as owners.
Just because a Kadey-Krogen 54 can travel all over earth doesn't mean the boat should look like it has. If you visit Ursa Minor today in Fort Lauderdale, you will find a clean top pedigree build with services up to date.

OWNER'S UPGRADES:
The hull and topsides are Airex sandwich construction. This was the most advanced yacht building technique of the era. Jim Krogen's closed cell PVC foam core is impervious to water. Meaning there is no risk of water intrusion or absorption into the fiberglass. The decks and superstructure are built from Divinycell sandwich construction. The final result is a yacht that is not only incredibility strong but one that operates much more quietly compared to other boats of this era.
Krogen 54 interiors are highly regarded for their luxury accommodations. These yachts are overly built and were designed to live life out at sea. The interior of Ursa Minor has benefited from a complete interior refit. In 2009 Argonautica Yacht Interior Design Company was contracted to upgrade the yacht's interior. When you compare Ursa Minor today to how this series of yachts was built new in the late 1980s, it is apparent styles and life aboard long range cruising yachts changed for the better. When you inspect Ursa Minor's interior, you notice the 1980s have been erased and everything inside Ursa Minor has been replaced. Soft goods, wallcoverings, carpeting, the galley was completely refit, custom mattresses and bedding. All the mica countertops have been replaced with attractive granite countertops. The owner hired one of her favorite Bahamian artists who etched custom glass shower doors to replace the shower curtains that originally came with the 54 Krogens. The carpeting was chosen specially and there is a lead lined carpet runner beneath the carpet padding which makes the interior of this yacht whisper quiet, even with the main engine and generator operating. The owners confirmed they easily hear their TV in the salon while cruising and nobody ever needs to raise their voice in order to be heard. Please study our photographs and additional interior details are shown later in the full specifications of Ursa Minor.
For the last 16 years, Ursa Minor has been owned by the same capable owner operators. Based in Fort Lauderdale Florida, "The Mister" is a retired superyacht captain and "The Missus" is a surgeon. Recently I visited the owners aboard their boat and the seller said to me, "I have the skills to do everything you see here and my wife makes sure we have the money in our boat maintenance fund account for me to do it." Touring Ursa Minor, I believe the seller to be accurate, there is no part of this trawler they haven't inspected, maintained, upgraded or replaced.
So far, the listing has spoken about the Awlgrip exterior re-paint, the professional interior refit and the replaced main engine and generator. The owners also completed a refit of their pilothouse helm. The original Kadey-Krogen 54 pilothouse was typical for her day and I do believe Mr. Krogen would approve of the work done to his hull # four. The seller completely changed the helm design and he built in his Garmin suite of electronics to match the helms of the 40-meter yachts he was captaining for a living. The wallcovering material used here is flat matt black, meaning no
glares or reflecting light while passage-making, just like the wheelhouses of the mega-yachts he ran.
The accommodations deck of this Krogen 54 is unique because she is a three-stateroom layout with two heads. The master is first and sits in the middle of the boat. This is a large stateroom and the ensuite bath has a bathtub.
Forward of the master stateroom, there are two staterooms that accommodate four guests. There is a twin bunk cabin to port and a double cabin located forward. The guests share a head located on the starboard side of Ursa Minor. This series of yachts is known for their abundant storage. Teak joiner work throughout the interior of this yacht still looks great. The interior of Ursa Minor was recently deep cleaned and we feel she is ready for your white glove inspection.
The widebody configuration with only starboard side deck, allows for a spacious and comfortable salon. Large windows permit near panoramic views and exceptional light. Portside has drop-leaf dining table for four. To starboard is an additional settee. Built-in cabinetry on port, starboard, and aft walls provide abundant stowage.
Located steps down from the salon is the companionway forward to three staterooms. As you walk forward, the laundry machine is to your left. Forward of laundry is a huge built is storage area with multiple drawers and lockers.
You really do have the ability to store away all the goods you'll need for long stretches away from any port. Just above eye level are three attritive opening port holes that follow the companionway forward. Also located in this companionway is the linen closet and walk in closet. The lower deck of Ursa Minor was modernized thanks to the interior refit done by Argonautica Yacht Interior Design Company of Fort Lauderdale.
MASTER STATEROOM:
The Master Stateroom sits low and in the middle. This is a large space with ensuite bath. Natural light comes in through the opening ports and through two boat prisms overhead. The berth is a walk around king sized bed. The German-Gel custom mattress was replaced in 2022. There is a full-size vanity on the portside of the master. Besides storage drawers beneath the bed, there is an uncommonly huge built in wardrobe locker. Needless to say, you have the ability to take your gear for all four seasons plus all your favorite shoes.
VIP STATEROOM:
The VIP stateroom is located forward and accommodates two in a double berth. Generous headroom in this stateroom adds to a comfortable feeling. A large opening hatch serves as emergency egress but also lets in natural light and fresh air. There is a makeup table and hanging locker and ample drawer storage on the starboard side of the VIP.
GUEST HEAD:
There is a full head with stand-up stall shower located to starboard for the two guest staterooms to share.
GUEST STATEROOM:
Along the port side and forward is the guest stateroom. The guest space is large enough for full size adults to sleep in complete comfort. There is more than adequate space between the upper and lower single berths to ensure a good night's rest. Reading lights, opening ports and 12-volt fans are all operational.
Up four steps from the salon, the pilothouse offers exceptional visibility, comfort, and spaciousness.
Good ventilation from the entry doors and opening windows. The reverse raked windows not only lend to the vessel's handsomeness and "salty look" appeal, but provide for reduced sun glare and increased visibility due to rain and spray. The settee also serves as a watch berth. All new pilot house layout has wrap around cabinets that house all the instruments black Formica to reduce glare, and Faux baby ostrich padded tops.
The Lugger/John Deere engine is rated continuous duty at 1600 rpm and above and has fuel consumption of 3.7 gph cruise speed at 1800 rpm 8.5 knots, Max speed 9.3 knots.
All new heads 2012 Raritan electric one push, all hoses, and vent replaced. Macerator replaced 2021.
Nibral Prop replaced 2016, with spare bronze prop parts include fresh water & bilge pumps, hoses, floats, belts, impellers, filters, watermaker rebuild kit, enough spares to cross Atlantic, dinghy props, and more.
Ursa Minor is on the market for the first time in 16 years. Mr. Krogen built a series of eight 54s and these long-range cruisers have attracted a cult like following for good reason. Krogen's 54s are serious cruising machines that were purpose built for exploring the world. Hull #4 has been pampered by experienced owner operators who have been able to check off every box on their wish list and for this reason, they are now ready to offer their Kadey-Krogen 54 for sale to her next owners. The sellers are sincerely motivated to sell their boat quickly, so please do not delay. Yacht buyers and yacht brokers worldwide, Ursa Minor is worthy of your serious consideration. Services are current and this trawler is ready for surveying today. Courtesy showings are available by appointment.
